Everest Treks
The Everest region is known for being the home of the famous Sherpas, an ethnic group that has gained recognition for the achievements of its members in mountaineering expeditions. The northern half of this region, known as Khumbu, is home to the highest mountain in the world and three other peaks that reach an impressive height of 8000 meters (26247 ft). All of these mountains are located within Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha National Park is a World Heritage Site located in the Solu-Khumbu district in the northeast. It spans an area of 1148 square kilometers. The park offers a great opportunity to observe high altitude species, including the Himalayan monal and Tibetan snow cock.
The Everest region offers a multitude of attractions, including the awe-inspiring mountains, picturesque villages nestled in high mountain valleys, ancient monasteries, and the fascinating local inhabitants with their legendary stories. The area in question is the second most popular trekking destination in Nepal. There are two options for traveling to and from Khumbu. The first option is to walk from Jiri, which is located near Kathmandu. The second option is to take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, an airstrip that is situated 1 to 2 days south of Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar serves as the entrance to the Everest region in the Khumbu valley.
If your goal is to reach the foot of Everest, we would recommend spending a minimum of 10 days in Khumbu. There are multiple ways to reach the Solu-Khumbu region. The entire trip takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks if you choose to walk from Jiri and fly back from Lukla. Walking to and from Khumbu takes almost two weeks, making it a significant part of the trip. Many trekkers find the journey from Jiri to Khumbu more enjoyable than the actual destination. For those with limited time, it is possible to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and stay in the lower villages of Khumbu. There are alternative ways to reach Khumbu on foot. One option is to hike to Rolwaling, which can be done by starting from either Barabise on the Kathmandu-Kodari road or Charikot on the Lamosangu-Jiri road. From there, you can cross the Tashi Labsta Pass to reach Khumbu. Another appealing option is to walk either to or from the southeast, specifically in the direction of the Arun drainage. Additionally, you have the option to enter and exit from the Tarai region.
Trekking in the Everest region allows you to explore the heart of the Himalayas, reaching the highest point of the mountain. Although it is possible to spend an entire month or even longer exploring the Everest region on foot, the most popular and commonly undertaken trek is the basic route from Lukla (which can be reached by air from Kathmandu) to Kala Patthar. This trek typically takes around 15 days to complete. Kala Patthar, located in Nepal, offers the most breathtaking views of Mt. Everest. This rocky hill stands at an impressive elevation of 5545m/ 18192 ft.
