One of the most common questions we receive from aspiring trekkers is: how many days will the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek take? The answer varies depending on your starting point, pace, acclimatization schedule, weather windows, and route variations but for most trekkers on the classic route, the journey to and from Base Camp takes roughly 12 to 14 days.

Why 12–14 days is the standard duration

Starting from the airstrip at Lukla (≈2,860 m) after a scenic flight from Kathmandu, trekkers typically spend about nine days ascending to EBC (≈5,364 m) with careful acclimatization. The descent usually takes three to four days.

This schedule allows for two vital rest/acclimatization days (commonly at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche) to give the body time to adjust and reduce the risk of altitude-related illness.
It also provides a buffer for flight delays into or out of Lukla (which can be impacted by weather) and avoids forcing overly long trekking days — thereby preserving both safety and enjoyment.

What affects how many days you actually need

  • Route & side excursions: If you include side trips like the Gokyo Lakes, Three Passes, or a drive rather than flight into Lukla, you’ll need extra days. On the flip side, a helicopter return can shorten the duration.

  • Fitness & pace: A fitter trekker may cover more ground each day, but even then altitude dictates a slower pace. Some ambitious itineraries attempt 10–11 days — but this compresses acclimatization time and increases risk.

  • Altitude & acclimatization: Skipping rest days may save time but greatly heightens the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

  • Weather & logistics: In the Everest region, the notorious Lukla airstrip and remote trail access mean flights can be delayed — adding a “hidden” day if you’re not flexible.

Example breakdown of a 13-day itinerary

Here’s how a typical 13-day EBC trek might look:

  • Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

  • Day 2: Flight to Lukla → trek to Phakding

  • Days 3-6: Trek to Namche Bazaar → acclimatization → onward to Dingboche or Lobuche

  • Day 7: Trek to Gorak Shep, side hike to EBC or optional Kala Patthar (5,500 m)

  • Days 8-10: Return trek to Lukla

  • Day 11: Flight back to Kathmandu

  • Day 12: Buffer / rest day in Kathmandu

  • Day 13: Departure
This schedule gives you sufficient trekking days, acclimatization, and a buffer to account for delays.

Can it be done in fewer days?

Yes — particularly if you are short on time. Some itineraries claim 10–11 days from Lukla to Kathmandu. But caution: these often omit full acclimatization, have longer walking days, and carry greater risk. For example, several sources warn that 12 days is already a minimum.

And what if you have more time?

If you have 15 or more days, you can slow the pace, explore lesser travelled villages, enjoy cultural stops, or add a side trek to the Gokyo Lakes. These extended itineraries enhance the experience, reduce the strain on your body, and allow deeper immersion in the Everest region.

Our recommendation

For most trekkers, we recommend planning 13 days (11 walking days + arrival & departure) as the optimal balance of time, acclimatization, and enjoyment. If you can afford a little more time, aim for 15 days or more to explore at a relaxed pace. Shorter than 12 days should only be attempted by experienced, well-prepared trekkers who accept the risks.

In summary: while the Everest Base Camp trek can be completed in less, the 12–14 day window is the safe, well-tested standard for most hikers. With proper planning, you’ll have time to soak in the grandeur of the Himalayas, adjust to altitude, and cross the legendary foothills of the world’s highest mountain in comfort and style.
